It is with extreme dissatisfaction and regret that BLM Upstate NY confirm reports that activist Jasmine Abdullah has been convicted of “felony attempted lynching” in Pasadena, CA for nonviolent actions taken during last year’s Peace March at La Pintoresca Park.
It is abundantly clear that Jasmine Abdullah is being made an example of by the Pasadena Police Department and the District Attorney’s office for exercising her rights to speak out against the systemic injustice and corruption saturating the area. The latest example of that injustice occurred within Pasadena Superior Court today, where jurors wept upon handing down their guilty verdict. Their tears confirmed what any morally conscious person already knew to be true: Jasmine Abdullah does not belong in prison.
Her conviction reinforces a longstanding American precedent in which Black and Brown bodies are publicly punished in an effort to quell resistance from the most oppressed and marginalized groups. It…
