This is not going to be some flowery, hipster political ‘got-cha’ social commentary. Just straight up truth and reality. For the last couple weeks, former supporters of the Bernie Sanders campaign and others of the progressive-to-left persuasion have lamented the likelihood that former Vice-President Joe Biden will win the Democratic Party nomination for President. In spite of the more recent allegations of sexual misconduct, canceled and postponed primaries, Biden still appears to be the presumptive nominee. Progressives and leftists of various denominations, particularly those associated with the Democratic Party are now pushing the community to vote for Biden because “we” must get rid of Trump, no matter what.
Again, we the people are being forced to vote for and accept a seriously flawed, corporate and wall-street democrat under the guise of voting for the ‘lesser of two evils’. The Black/New Afrikan working-class and poor are again being called upon to save the neo-liberal and neo-colonial agenda of the Democratic party, ‘hold our noses’ and vote for a candidate who helped to usher in mass incarceration: draconian legislation, policies and practices which continue to wreck havoc throughout the national Black community. Others demand that the Black community vote for Biden because he was Obama’s vice-president for eight years. Many of those folks are still enamored and brainwashed by the Obama mystique and political mythology. While yet another segment within the Black/New Afrikan community suggest that Biden should be supported because he has promised to select a female running-mate, perhaps a Black woman. Stacey Abrams, Kamala Harris and even Michelle Obama are the names being tossed around as possible vice-presidential running mates on the Biden ticket.
The bureaucratic elite of the Democratic Party (Democratic National Committee-DNC) campaigned hard to stop Bernie Sanders from being their nominee. They fought harder against the Sanders narrative and platform than they did to counter the ongoing narrative and campaign of Donald Trump. These people are a corporate, racist, imperialist and war-mongering clique that masquerades behind liberal platitudes, rhetoric and misplaced identity politics. Bernie Sanders knows them well and should have known that they would fight tooth and nail to suppress his political ascendency to the white house. But again, he (Sanders) took the same path toward 2020 as he took in 2016…, with the same predictable results.
And, Sanders himself has taken the same political posture as he did in 2016, which is to publicly support the presumptive or official candidate of the Democratic Party: Hillary in 2016, Biden in 2020. Meanwhile all these progressives and leftists are in a tizzy as if they have lost all common sense and direction. Bernie Sanders led people into a political trap-house. No options, no alternatives, no real movement except support for the presumptive Democratic Party nominee, no matter how racist, reactionary, militarist or corporatist he or she may be.
A real political revolution starts with proposing, building and developing a real political alternative. The Democratic Party is not the way. It cannot be reformed, rigged, manipulated or transformed to genuinely represent the best collective interest of Black/New Afrikan people or working –class people in general. It is thoroughly corrupt to its core and beyond any immediate redemption. Please don’t take my word for it. Look around for yourself. Along with Sanders and other former Democratic presidential candidate rivals, every major Congressional democrat (including the vaunted ‘squad’ of progressive women of color) has come out in support of Joe Biden per endorsement or vote. Yes, even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) said that she would vote for Biden.
So here we are again. Having to pick between Pig #1 or Pig #2 in the name of the “lesser of two evils”. Always presented with a Republican boogeyman (Nixon, Goldwater, Ford, Bush, McCain, Romney, and Trump) as an incentive to secure power for the so-called liberal wing of the ruling class, but never experiencing genuine freedom and liberation as an exchange for our votes. As Black people, we must develop, build and support an alternative political narrative and reality that is based on Black freedom and power, not neo-liberal pandering.
Contrary to the rhetoric and hype, Donald Trump is not an existential threat to the collective well being of Black people. That threat and its supporting cast existed long before Trump took office. The existential threat is white-supremacy, economic injustice (in the form of capitalism and imperialism) and the war-mongering and environmental destruction that accompanies it. Trump, however is its latest manifestation who demonstrates more raw neo-fascist tendencies than his recent predecessors. The real existential threat is embodied in both the republican and democratic parties, not just its individual representatives. So, for all the reasons listed above (and many, many more), I CAN NOT in good conscience support or vote for either JOE BIDEN (or DONALD TRUMP). I hope you won’t either.
